About Connell

Connell is a small rural community in Eastern Washington of 3190 people. The community was established in 1883 as a railroad stop called Palouse Junction.  The community later became known as Connell, named after Northern Pacific Station Agent, Joseph Connell. The Connell Post Office was authorized in January 1887.  Much of the old town was destroyed by fire in the late 1890s and was rebuilt along the present Columbia Avenue.  A major portion of the business district again burned in July 1905. Connell was incorporated in 1910. The primary industrial base is food processing, agricultural chemicals and minimum and medium security correction facilities. The community is also home to the North Franklin School District where there is a High School, Alternative High School, Junior High, Grade School and Administration offices. Both the State and County have transportation facilities in the community.

The community is very proud of the number of Parks that it has and the care that is lavished upon them. The City also has a pool which was recently remodeled. City athletic fields range from general purpose open space, to soccer and baseball fields. There is a broad choice of housing styles and prices for residents with a new housing development underway. The City has recently purchased additional water rights and has abundant water for future growth in residential, commercial and industrial activities. A new wastewater treatment facility is under construction and is near completion. New waterlines are also being installed to replace aging pipes. Even with these timely improvements, the City will continue to experience some of the lowest water and sewer charges in the state.

During the last ten years the City has rebuilt Columbia Avenue, the main thoroughfare, reconstructed it's industrial streets, and has recently received a grant award to reconstruct a portion of Clark Street which connects the downtown to highway 260 on the west side of town, and serves the Junior and Senior High Schools and administration buildings for the school district.

Connell has grown 28% in the last ten years and is a vibrant progressive community that is preparing itself to take advantage of opportunities in this new century.

City of Connell Newsletter

August 2010

The whole city would like to extend a big thank you to the members of the community for the work they did in moving the historical school building from the country to the grounds of the Historical Museum. A special thank you goes to Gary Desmarais for his role in supervising the project (No easy task when you consider the crew he was forced to work with: Gary Walton, our fine mayor, Darrell Ferguson and John Lindner).

An appeal is going out to local artists to submit sketches of murals to put in the upstairs windows of the Legion building. See flyers that are floating around the city.

Gentle Reminder: Now is the time to register your Mini Float, Antique Tractor, or classic Car in the Fall Festival Parade (They all qualify as mini floats and can be registered in the contest for a mere $10.00.
